British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
